It is with great celebration the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival crossed the 20 year threshold in 2023, resurrecting the full scale festival for the first time in three years. Reaching year twenty, the Big Sky Film Institute team has reflected on the things that have contributed to the longevity of the beloved BSDFF. In our second year as a hybrid festival, Big Sky welcomed 22,845 attendees over 13 days to screenings, DocShop sessions, classroom events, and networking forums. This year also marked the return to full capacity in-person activities, and what a triumphant return it was.
An exhibition of the transformative power of documentary storytelling, the 149 films in the 2023 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival program explored revolutionary art, profound female strength, defiant politics, elder wisdom, stirring portraits, an environment in crisis, contemporary media literacy, and a globalized world in flux.
