Elisabeth’s baby brother was in town this week to play a show at a local bar and one of her mom’s friends opened the show with a poetry reading.
He talked about how it had taken six months to develop the structure of his opus. I can absolutely understand that. The pattern of the words and letters worked. The limitations of his structure pushed him to make even more creative choices. Neil Gaiman talked about how he was much more likely to write for an anthology with a specific idea rather than an invite that told him to write whatever he wanted. It’s how A Study in Emerald was written.
It is a disservice to say that the structure of writing is a restriction to the craft. Craft is the tool of the trade. We have a generation of writers who believe they could start their artistic journey in Picasso’s Blue Period. Most artists only create hyperreality in their early work through sheer talent or chance.
