The first Balch appeared in what is now the United States in 1623 as indentured servents who worked their way to freedom. Like many, if not most, United States Balches, I trace my ancestry to John Balch. John Balch's home still stands in Beverly Ma. -- the house is the oldest still-standing house built by European settlers in the United States and is now a museum .
