The Art Institute of Chicago Founder of the Der Blau Reiter along with Wassily Kandinsky, German Expressionist Franz Marc shunned traditional painting styles and subject matter in favor of expressive and symbolic harmonies of form and color. Artists of Der Blau Reiter often maintained a spiritual bent in their work, and Marc developed an emotional scale for use in his color combinations, with blue symbolizing the severe and sp
