Artists make work broadly based on their own experiences – and I am no exception… In 2002 I had a major stroke and I have developed this website in the hope that it may help people who are supporting loved ones going through a similar experience.

Every stroke is different. In my case, I was left seriously impaired physically, with no movement down my my whole right side and with a semi-dislocated shoulder. I was also unable to swallow without choking and had distorted vision. And I could not speak: for a while, although I was completely lucid in my head, I could not retrieve the words and I was only able to communicate by gestures… ‘Yes’ …’No… It was immensely lonely and frustrating.

For several years, in my art I have explored this experience which so profoundly affected my life. I have tried to find a visual language to explore the ideas, and the work has focussed mostly on distortion of vision (hemianopia) and loss of language (aphasia). This has been very much ‘work in progress’, and my experience of stroke has actually proved to be a source of creative inspiration! (Against expectations, I have made a very good recovery - for which I am profoundly grateful.)
