In 2013 a group of adult educators from across Europe came together to see how they could disseminate, accredit and enhance experience of adult learning electronically. The first course, looking at the various aspects of adult education across Europe, was so successful that a second phase was created looking at adult education in the future. Those courses stand as resources and the sustained "AE PRO" platform continues to provide stimulation, inspiration, and learning around adult education in the EU.
The FutureLabAE project addresses two main issues: the situation of democracy in Europe, where an increasing number of citizens, who, discontent with the political establishment, start leaning towards xenophobic and populist parties or choose not to vote at all; and the the alarmingly high number of people in Europe who lack basic skills, especially digital skills, leaving parts of the population unable to benefit from the digital transformation.
