Drive west along St. Josephs from Coors Boulevard and at the corner with Atrisco Drive you will encounter a stretch of large black piping that snakes under and over the ground for hundreds of feet, continuing past the entrance to Ladera golf course to its end at Flor Silvestre. The piping, which has been in place since March, is part of a large rehabilitation project that will upgrade sewer lines that have been in place since the 1960s and that are reaching the end of their useful lives.

The work will also help avoid situations such as the collapse of a pipe several months ago under Coors and Illif Road, just south of I-40, that resulted in a call for homes along the sewer line to limit their use while emergency crews made repairs. The pipes are a key part of sewage processing for the West Side, taking material to the treatment facility.

Tom Matthews, project manager for the Water Authority, said plans and preparations for the new effort have been under development over the past several months. The first phase of the effort, which is near completion, runs from Western Trail south to Ladera Drive, then to Flor Silvestre. Phase 2 will begin at the Ladera Golf Course and continue south to 64th Street and Interstate 40.
