According to the latest data from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five Americans experiences a mental health concern each year. For too many, a combination of stigma and lack of accessible care leaves people feeling like they don’t have anywhere to turn for help.
One note about statistics: The NAMI data precedes the emotional toll of 2020, where the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, economic instability, social injustice, political unrest and natural disasters have affected individuals’ emotional wellbeing across the globe. Although the impact has yet to be completely fully measured, these events have clearly exposed the importance of mental health care and the urgency to Start the Conversation.
The 1in5 Campaign focuses on normalizing the need for mental health resources and removing the stigma for those who want to access care. Let’s concentrate on #SupportNotStigma.
