Gender Based Violence is violence directed against an individual due to their gender. There are many forms that GBV can take such as: Physical, sexual, financial, structural or emotional. This violence can be committed by an intimate partner, acquaintances, friends, strangers and institutions.
Globalled an estimated 736 million women (1 in 3) have been subjected to some sort of Gender based violence. Over a quarter of women between the ages of 15-49 have been subjected to physical and/or sexual violence by their intimate partner in their lifetime. 58% of the women murdered in 2015 were killed by an intimate partner.
The statistics above are just the tip of the iceberg. Gender based violence is much more prevelant than we can comprehend. As a woman there is perpetual fear that based on your location, your outfit and who you surround yourself with – there is a chance you can be in danger.
