Steelworkers (USW) Local 1-405 was first chartered as a Local Union in 1944. From 1944 until September of 2004, Local 1-405 was part of the Union known as the IWA or IWA Canada. In 2004 the IWA merged with the United Steelworkers and Local 1-405 is now part of the Steelworkers and is known as Steelworkers Local 1-405, (or USW Local 1-405).

There are more than forty sub-locals (places of employment) through-out the East and West Kootenays that are certified to Local 1-405 and they make up a proud and strong Local Union. The United Steelworkers Local 1-405 is a diverse union representing 1300 workers in Sawmills, Credit Unions, Insurance Services, Hotels, Ski Resorts and Municipal workers in the East and West Kootenays.
