Put between a rock and a hard place. To draw out the unbelief and extinguish it. Unbelief lies below the surface, invisible, nearly asleep, waiting for a circumstantial object (Red Sea, a bossy family, difficulty of a broken relationship, threat of loss and violence) to begin to sow doubt like yeast in bread. It looks powerful and overwhelming, but only in our minds.
Then the mushrooming daily tasks which can devour our faith like oceans swallow salt; we imagine an anxious vision of all we cannot do in a sea of despair.
The soul knows better than to fall but can only speak to the mind indirectly through a broken heart, in the deepest state of knowing truth. When the soul orders the steps according to the Father’s drumbeat, the human heart will break and the mind will finally rest, which then begins a resignation to the purest beauty. Heart sickness is the surest path.
