Metaphysics is a field of philosophy named after a book of Aristotle’s writings called Metaphysics. This book is in an organization of Aristotle’s works produced by scholars who followed Aristotle (and not by Aristotle himself). The title literally means “after the Physics.” The title Metaphysics refers to the fact that this book came after the book titled Physics in the organization of the writings. This does not go very far towards explaining what the field of metaphysics studies.
