Heavy Metal. Though not found on the periodic table, don’t be surprised if some bands borrowed names for songs from the heavy elements. My passion for metal music isn’t entirely mainstream. Heavy Metal spans the globe; in fact, there was a documentary made about it. Aptly titled, ‘Global Metal,’ explores the music phenomena as an anthropologist dissects why the genre has such fervent followers in all corners of the earth.
Genre Names
Doom? Thrash? Are these actual names for styles of music? Yes. Names tend to indicate the overall theme or mood of the band’s musical style. Doom Metal will sound more sullen, even morose at times. Thrash Metal has more of a bad-boy, beer-swilling, party vibe with a guitar riff in the background. Grunge? Think Nirvana , but there’s Soundgarden and Pearl Jam to consider as well.
