December 13, 2022 The result is in! The Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Foundation recently announced the result of its annual poll to decide the kanji character that best represents the year. And of the almost quarter of a million responses from members of the public, the msot popular choice was 'sen', the character for 'war' or 'battle'.
The character is thought to have evoked two quite different major stories of the year - the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the spirited battles fought by the Japanese national football team in the World Cup in Qatar.
