Block parties are a chance for the community to come together and celebrate. The Alliance for Quality Education deserved one. After decades of fighting, they were able to get New York State to give $4 billion to gain adequate and equitable resources for public school students in low-income communities. Their block party took place in the summer of 2021 at P.S. 48 in Washington Heights just before schools were about to fully reopen after students were online for over a year due to Covid-19.
I was able to talk to Maria Bautista, former campaign manager for the Alliance for Quality Education and NY Senator Robert Jackson to learn more about this win in education. Also in attendance were NY Majority Leader for the State Senate Andrea Stewart- Cousins , NY Senator John Liu , and the former Chancellor of NYC Public Schools, Meisha Porter .
