GWCS is a package for managing the World Coordinate System (WCS) of astronomical data.
The mapping from ‘pixel’ coordinates to corresponding ‘real-world’ coordinates (e.g. celestial coordinates, spectral wavelength) is crucial to relating astronomical data to the phenomena they describe.
