The Five Mountain Zen Order was founded in 2008 by Ven. Wonji Dharma, in an attempt to bridge the void of location and  accessibility by utilizing modern technology to reach potential seekers in all corners of the globe. He chose the tagline, "The Monastery Beyond Walls," because this new organization would not be constrained by traditional limitations found with fixed locations.

In 2012, Ven. Wonji together with other members of Five Mountain, decided to incorporate Five Mountain as a Nevada Nonprofit corporation. Five Mountain was incorporated and into the new corporation was placed all the assets of Five Mountain, including the then recently acquired "College of Zen Buddhist Studies," which after incorporation the Five Mountain nonprofit decided to rename "Buddha Dharma University." The nonprofit then registered in its name the domain buddhadharmauniversity.org and started to off
