A slot is a narrow notch, groove, slit, or opening, especially a narrow one for receiving or admitting something, as a keyway in machinery, a coin in a vending machine, or an aperture in a door. The word derives from the root of the verb to slot, meaning “to place or fit into a position”: You can use the term as an adjective as well: He was slotted into the four o’clock meeting.
The Slot receiver is a wide receiver who lines up a few steps behind the line of scrimmage, allowing him to run routes that are similar to those of the outside receivers, or even act as a decoy for running plays such as slants and sweeps. They are also often called on to block on running plays, although they don’t deal the big blocks that linemen do. This is because they are lined up in a spot that makes them more vulnerable to big tackles from defenders coming from different directions.
