This year we recognize the impact of various flags and their importance to our military veterans. Some iconic images of the U.S. flag include Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima, astronauts planting the flag on the moon, and firefighters raising the flag over the rubble of the Twin Towers on 9/11, an event that predicated the Global War on Terror.
For military personnel, flags play an important role in creating pride and esprit de corps. It is an honor for them to be buried under its colors. The U.S. flag stands for our nation, its shared history, pride, principles, and commitment of its people. Similarly, there are flags to represent each branch of the military and each ship of the Navy. There are guidons to denote each and every unit of our armed services.
