On 27th September 2007, as a result of bifurcation of Surat district, two new districts came into existanence, Surat and Tapi. Vyara was made headquarter of newly formed Tapi district, whereas Surat remained headquarter of Surat district. Tapi district is located in South Gujarat region, sharing its border with Nandurbar district of Maharashtra.
