Writing from Livingston, Montana, former railroad town now populated by writers, painters, fishing guides, former movie stars and other assorted oddballs, my territory is that central question, how are we to live well on a hotter, drier planet while protecting our vulnerable wilderness areas?
I moved here to buy a small house, to build a big garden, and to participate in a vibrant community. I write along the seams of domestic and wild lives, seeking those less-travelled paths that lead to creative relationships with place, and with the people and animals who inhabit our spectacular landscape.
I am the author of Place Last Seen (Picador USA, 2000). From 2002 to 2012 I blogged at LivingSmall . I reviewed cookbooks for Bookslut from 2009-2013. I have been published in Dark Mountain, Terrain.org, The Best Food Writing of 2010, Big Sky Journal, Montana Quarterly.
