The 12,000-acre tarsands project is located in Alberta’s Athabasca Oil production region, in the heart of traditional energy developments, and is surrounded by major oil and gas producers. Counterbalance has voluntarily discontinued its application for oil extraction, instead leaving the reserves in the ground.
Other types of carbon credits may offset only a portion of emissions, and confidence can vary in the permanence and effectiveness of carbon capture and storage methods. Avoidance carbon credits guarantee that fossil fuels remain in the ground, an essential tactic in any long-term strategy that tackles climate change.
