In 1927, a businessman from Sturgeon Falls purchased the property at 150 Main Street East in to build a theatre but went bankrupt during construction. He sold his interests to the Famous Players of Canada Corporation who opened the doors to the new Capitol Theatre on June 1, 1929. The Betty Speers Theatre has retained its original design and elegance since 1929 (with modern upgrades made along the way).
