Vadodara ( IPA : /ʋə'ɽod̪əɾa/), which used to be known as Baroda , is the third largest city in the Western Indian State of Gujarat , after Ahmedabad and Surat . It is the administrative headquarters of Vadodara District and is located on the banks of the Vishwamitri river, southeast of Ahmedabad , 139 kilometres (86 mi) from the state capital Gandhinagar .
