Slot is the term for a wide receiver who lines up on the inside of the formation. This position is vital to a team’s success, as it gives the quarterback more routes to attack defenses from all over the field. In addition, the quarterback can use his or her knowledge of the defense to create a matchup that will be advantageous for the offense.
The slot receiver also provides an extra blocker when running outside run plays. This will protect the backs from blitzes and help them gain more yardage. Additionally, if the quarterback decides to run the ball, the slot will be the first receiver to break into open space and make an easy reception.
In general, a slot receiver is smaller than a traditional wide receiver. They are typically between 5’8’’ and 6’0’’ tall and weigh about 180-190 pounds. Their size allows them to gain quick separation from defenders and catch short, low-thrown passes. They should be able to jump and run fast enough to beat out defenders for the ball, but also be tough enough to absorb contact when running through a crowd.
