In my teen years, multiple family members passed away between November and Christmas for two years in a row. I was often absent to attend funerals of loved ones, one after another. A former classmate finally said, “Geez, are you gonna have any family left?” Decades later, that comment still stings.
The most traumatic was when I was pulled from class because we had to rush hours away to be at my grandmother’s bedside. That was the longest ride of my life. She was the person who loved me unconditionally. She was my safe place and I adored her. She died on Thanksgiving.
