Vocational, industry-standard training is a core mission of the Alpha Vocational Training Center (AVTC). The Sisters of Mercy-led institution is focused on the holistic development and career advancement of its students—young men aged 16 to 20—in barbering, screen printing, carpentry, and music performance. Not only is HEART/NTA certification available, but Alpha makes every effort to facilitate the transition from school to work through participation in job fairs and work experience with a local employer.
Alpha was glad to welcome Grammy winner Chance the Rapper who visited the Alpha School of Music on its April Open Day. In addition to touring the campus and meeting with ASOM staff and students, Chance jammed with ASOM band members and had great praise for the programme and students. We think there is a future for Chance The Band, don’t you?
Music education is a challenge for many primary schools in Jamaica. With just a few tips and tools its possible to share the benefits of music so the Alpha School of Music, in partnership with Cornerstone Jamaica, Travelers Beach Resort and Jamaica Nice, delivered a percussion workshop for primary school school teachers in Negril that they could use right away and even share with their fellow teachers.
