“All Hands On Deck!” is a well-known signal used on board of ships, and it calls for everyone to come help in a particular situation. The labor crisis of the last years has also affected the shipwright profession, one of the oldest occupations in Europe, and especially two groups: young workers and apprentices have difficulties to find job opportunities, and professionals beyond the age of 45 years do not easily adapt to the changing labor market.
In line with the European Agenda for Adult Learning (ET2020) it is necessary to give more opportunities to possible career transitions in case of long-term unemployment. At the same time, some professions such as shipwright are growing in some parts of Europe, and a replication in other countries is expected, because wooden shipbuilding is more environmentally friendly, and expert shipbuilders are highly requested in all maritime areas. The AHOD project aims to recover and connect traditional techniques and skills of the shipwright profession, one of the oldest occupations in Europe’s maritime areas. The project creates training tools for adult professionals and thus contributes to the conservation of immaterial cultural heritage in shipwright.
